Stainless Steel LeadscrewAll leadscrews are rolled from precision ground 303 stainless steel. The properties of the raw material are controlled to exactingm standards to ensure the highest quality product available.

HSI also offers a Teflon coated leadscrew option for its line of minature linear actuators. The use of a Teflon coated leadscrew allows for a "greaseless" screw and nut interface. This leadscrew option is ideal for applications where conventional oils and greases can no be used for leadscrew lubrication.

In addition to the leadscrew finishes available, HSI has a wide selection of greases designed to meet any application requirements.

LUBRICATION OPTIONS

Lubrication OptionsBlack Ice™ Coating: Black Ice™ is a durable and effective lubrication option. A proprietary blend of PTFE (using a Teflon® formulation base) and unique binders distributes an even, uniform, layer of solid lubricant throughout the coating allowing for long wear and excellent abrasion resistance.

Haydon Super Slick Greases: Haydon offers a wide selection of greases designed to meet any application requirements:

HSS-17 is a medium viscosity synthetic hydrocarbon grease thickened with lithium soap. It is fortified with EP (extreme pressure) modifiers to increase load carrying capabilities and Teflon® to increase lubricity and reduce friction. Rated temperature capacity is -20°C to +125°C.

HSS-06 is a Teflon® thickened heavy viscosity perfluoropolyether grease. It is designed to operate in chemically harsh environments and provides excellent operating properties for light to medium loads. Rated temperature capacity is -65°C to +250°C.

HSS-16 is a perfluoropolyether grease developed for use in vacuum environments. Rated temperature capacity is -80°C to +204°C.

HSS-20 is an ultrafiltered version of HSS-06, meaning that the grease it put through a ‘cleaning’ process to remove any particles greater than 35 microns in size. It is designed for use when accuracy and repeatability are of utmost concern.

LEADSCREW PROFILES

Acme threads were developed over 100 years ago for use as a power transmission thread. Originally derived from a square thread form the Acme thread allows for easier manufacturing while still maintaining a high level of efficiency. There are several thread forms used for power transmission and positioning, but they all have included angles greater than 29° which reduces efficiency. The force that the threads transmit is perpendicular or normal to the flank of the thread, this results in an axial force component and a radial force component. The lower this included angle is the more efficient the thread will be. All of Haydon’s leadscrew assemblies are a 29° Acme thread form.

EFFICIENCY AND LIFE DATA

EFFICIENCY OF LEADSCREW ASSEMBLIES WITH BLACK ICE™ COATING
EFFICIENCY (%) VS. LEAD (mm) FOR SELECTED SCREW DIAMETERS

LEADSCREW & NUT EFFICIENCY

  • Efficiency curve is based on a measured static coefficient of friction of .08
  • Efficiency is shown for a Balck Ice ™ coated screw and Polyacetal Nut
  • The torque required to drive a load is defined by the following equation:
  • NOTE:  If load is in kg, multiply by 9.8 to get N

LEADSCREW ASSEMBLIES PREDICTED LIFE

RATED LOAD OF ANTI-BACKLASH NUT (%) VS. LINEAR TRAVEL DISTANCE

LEADSCREW & NUT PREDICTED LIFE CURVE

  • Life is given as a linear distance for a given percentage of rated load
  • "N" nut load on the right side, "C", "W", and "T" nut percent of rated load on the left side
  • Example:  A "W" style nut with a design load rating of 25 lbs that is used at 70% of that rating (17.5lbs) is predicted to have a life of 75 million linear inches, which equals 2000 linear kilometers
